TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) Syndrome

TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) Syndrome

TMJ syndrome is characterised by pain and compromised movement of the jaw and the surrounding musculature.

The temporomandibular joint or TMJ acts like a sliding hinge, connecting your jawbone to your skull.

What are the symptoms of TMJ Syndrome?

You may be experiencing symptoms such as jaw pain, difficulty chewing or pain with chewing, locking/catching/clicking of the jaw joint and headache, earache and neck pain.

Common causes include teeth grinding, jaw injuries, arthritis and everyday wear and tear.

Your chiropractor will take a detailed history and examination to determine whether the temporomandibular joint is the source of your pain.

Treatment for TMJ syndrome may include manipulation, mobilisation, muscle therapies, mouth gaurds, medication, soft diet to avoid chewing and avoiding clenching your jaw.
