One of the most commonly asked questions we face in practice is when should I get a new mattress? The Bed Blog aims to answer some of those questions.

Although there is no simple answer to this question there are a couple of things to consider. Firstly how old is your mattress? While the quality of a mattress and therefore its longevity is normally dependant on the price you paid, most mattress’ start to show signs of deterioration after 8 to 10 years. Secondly if you find that you are climbing into bed at night pain free but waking in the morning stiff and sore then you might want to cast a critical eye over your bed.

Once the question of when should I get a new mattress has been addressed, the inevitable next question is what should I look for in a new mattress? Well here are a few helpful pointers to keep in mind when you next find yourself in the showroom of your local bedroom store.

Buy a mattress that provides the proper support for your entire body and promotes good posture.

Your spine should lay parallel and not sag in any area because the bed is too soft, or bow because the bed is too hard.

The mattress should be six inches longer than the tallest person sleeping in the bed.

The width of the bed should allow enough space for the person’s pillow and even for a person to put their hands behind their head without their elbows touching any other person sleeping.

If the person is a restless sleeper, it is recommended that the bed be wider to accommodate some tossing and turning.

Take time to try out the bed before you buy and see if it’s the right fit for you.

At the end of the day there are many options available when it comes to buying your next bed. Remember to do your research and take your time.
